Continuum performs for the reason that Windows 10 developed to work any screen size or device type from HoloLens, the enhanced reality handset, to personal computer to smartphones. Microsoft offers a $99 accessory called the Display Dock, that enables the handset plug into a mouse, keyboard and monitor.

The gold of Continuum is to allow users who first computer is not a PC have a full access to PC when they need one. CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella explained the target market as growing markets, where smartphones are available but PC are not. By minimizing the hardware needs, Microsoft is delivering this vision to more and more smartphones in many places.
